Midrib at Midrib and Trifolio
Midrib is an exhibition of three-dimensional, low-relief sculptural wall works, combined with and in relationship to monoprint letterpress works on paper. The text is borrowed from medieval and ancient botanical remedies, some of which survive only in partial segments. From these remedies, only the words describing the remedy's actions are retained and mirrored, some leaving an imprint, others viscerally visible. The monoprint ink in these works is pulled from tracings of still life flowers and plants, themselves partial interpretations of nature, found in Renaissance still life paintings, all attributed to female painters.
This exhibition asks: Can we center effort and looking as part of the healing process? Can healing power be drawn out of the past? What does reworking, abstracting labor from past generations hold or give out?
This exhibition took place at the conclusion of a print residency at the Columbus Printed Arts Center.
