Angle of Repose, 5 seats.
The angle of repose is the steepest angle at which granular material can be piled without slumping; at that angle, the material is on the verge of sliding. This series of five stools sits in a circle and is meant to hold a person up, or hold them within. Not a container, but a suggestion: to rest, to be held up. Each stool takes the distinct shape of a leaf, drawn from a cyanotype by the nineteenth-century botanist Anna Atkins. Inlaid onto each stool is a single line of text derived from Hildegard of Bingen's books on healing remedies. These segments of remedies were chosen for their transcendent meaning, and they speak to our need to rest, to heal, and to pause.
